With all these brand new products, we thought that it could be useful to remind you how to choose furniture for your baby’s nursery.

Safety first!

First, make sure that your nursery is baby-proofed, as it takes a few months before little fingers begin exploring…

  • Use a new crib or cot that has been safety approved.
  • Position cot away from windows.
  • Use child safety covers for electric outlets.
  • Use only safety nightlight styles that children cannot pull out. Keep them at least three feet from bedding and other flammable materials.
  • Install baby monitors and other cords a safe distance from the crib.
  • Don’t hang pictures or shelves directly over a cot.
  • Use a safety strap to anchor tall pieces of furniture so they don’t tip over when your child starts climbing.

Once you have taken stock of all of the above precautions, it’s time to start thinking about what you need to buy and what atmosphere you want to create for your new baby!

Moses basket, cot and cot bed

The first factor you need to consider is where your newborn will be sleeping.

First, purchase a moses basket to keep your little one comfortable and close at hand. It is usually kept next to mum’s bedside for convenient night time feeds and close bonding. Furthermore, babies sleep well in moses baskets or cribs initially as they provide a small sleeping environment which helps them feel secure.

Your baby can be moved from a moses basket to a cot bed between 4 and 6 months. A cot bed does the same job as a cot but, when the baby turns into a toddler, the cot bed can be changed from a cot into the bed (usually by taking off the sides). The principal difference between the two is that the cot bed can last up to five or six years depending on the size of the child whilst a cot will need to be replaced after a year or two.

Mattress

Then, you have to choose a good mattress for your cot or cot bed. It is essential to buy a new mattress as the second-hand mattresses are not advised.

Mattresses come is several sizes, so buying the correct size is vital. As a general rule, when a mattress is gently pushed to one side there should be no more than 4cm gap to the rails. This is to prevent baby from becoming trapped. Next, it exist different mattress types:

a. Foam Mattress

There are the least expensive type and usually have a wipe clean PVC covering over a foam interior.

b. Sprung Mattress

These mattresses are of a similar construction to sprung adult mattresses. Usually one side is covered by a wipe clean PVC type material and the other side has a cotton covering. These covers are often removable for washing.

c. Fibre Mattress

This type is the most expensive and also the longest lasting. The construction is based on latex-coated coconut fibre to form an open cellular core which is finished with layers of felt and a wipe-clean covering. These mattresses are said to withstand considerable abuse (bouncing and jumping, etc…).

Baby changing table

A baby changing table comes to provide comfort and convenience to both the baby and the mother. You need to consider a few things before you buy a changing table. Consider the amount of storage space required for the baby’s requirements carefully – the common requirements are clothes, nappies and wipes, cotton wool, creams, lotions and ointments, and a separate space for dirty clothes and nappies. Remember that when the baby is on the table, everything should be within the reach of the mother. Besides sufficient storage space, the diaper table should have guardrails, safety straps, and a non-toxic finish.

Nursery Wardrobe

Although your baby is only tiny, you will be surprised how extensive his or her wardrobe can be, so if you have the space and the finances, a nursery dresser is a great bonus. It is a good idea to find something to match the rest of your nursery furniture as it will help to maintain a consistent atmosphere.
